Quick Take: Youku Unmoved by IPR Infringement Suits

A flare-up between rival online video service providers Youku (NYSE:YOKU) and Tudou (Nasdaq:TUDO) in mid-December over copyright infringements -- nothing particularly out of the ordinary initially -- has continued to escalate in domestic media in the intervening weeks, and a growing number of content providers and broadcasters have joined Tudou in accusing Youku of video piracy. However, we expect Youku to make few concessions to other content rights owners in the short term, though pressure on the government to raise IPR protection may increase in the longer term.
