Red Innovation Report: China Mobile Handset Primer, May 2005

SHANGHAI, HONG KONG - China's domestic handset industry has been on a roller coaster ride since the turn of the millennium. In 2003, domestic manufacturers accounted for 55 percent of the Chinese handset market. However, by the end of 2004, foreign vendors had rebounded, pushing domestic market share back below 45 percent. There will be 370 million mobile phone users in China by the end of 2005 but from a vendor perspective the market is becoming increasingly crowded and the competition is intense. This year could see several small domestic handset producers exit the market, even as the industry awaits a 3G inspired boost. Pacific Epoch looks at these issues and the players that will shape industry outcomes in the "Pacific Epoch China Handset Primer." "There has been renewed interest in China's handset market following TechFaith's IPO and the change in handset manufacturer license rules," said Pacific Epoch editor Elias Glenn. "The industry is moving from the 'wild west' anyone-can-get-in mind set to a mature industry and we think there are opportunities to be had in the transition." The Primer is a report for industry outsiders who are looking at the China market and want to get up to speed on the current market landscape. This report is the sixth of Pacific Epoch's Red Innovation Reports. The next report investigates the state of China's ecommerce industry.
